In this talk, we discuss our recent investigations on laser-diodes and the related light-emitting diodes material-structures for lighting, and data communications. These semiconductor devices are compact, small foot-print, mercury-free, and therefore are favorable for energy-saving and eco-friendly high-brightness, high-power light-sources. Moreover, we will demonstrate that the laser-based lighting can be used for horticulture; growing plant healthily, happily and organically. For improving efficiency and color tunability, we embarked on three-pronged approach related to innovations in integrated-functionalities lasers, lasers epitaxially grown on low strain-field semipolar GaN substrates, and nanowires-based light emitters grown on unconventional substrates. Our research focuses on understanding the fundamental properties of group-III nitride materials and device-structures, while accentuating the practicality of planar and nanowires light-emitters platforms beyond basic investigations.
Biography: Tien Khee Ng is a research scientist at Photonics Laboratory, and a co-investigator at the KACST-sponsored Technology Innovation Center (TIC) for Solid State Lighting at KAUST. His primary research interest is on the molecular-beam-epitaxy grown materials and lasers / light-emitting diodes on unconventional substrates.
